3 Ways to Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Does this scenario sound familiar? You could make one small change which could take your life or business to the next level... but you are fearful. The thought of taking this chance creates stress and fear that builds up inside of you. Playing it safe is the way that you coast through life. But is coasting through life enough for you?

The reality is: staying in your comfort zone can hold you back from a world of opportunity both personally and professionally. And any change you’d like to make won’t happen if you stay in your comfort zone.

Doing things the way you have always done them is fine if you are okay with your current situation being the status quo. But, if there was one small thing that you could do that would take your life or business to the next level, wouldn’t you want the courage to take that leap of faith? What if you could step outside of your comfort zone and experience the kind of change that could be life-altering?

Truthfully, any change you would like to make won’t happen if you stay in your comfort zone and it won’t happen by doing things the way you have always done them. Being the smart cookie that you are, you probably already knew that, right?. So what’s the problem? What is really holding you back?

What is the Comfort Zone?

First thing's first: what is the comfort zone? The comfort zone is the place that you feel safe in. It’s where you can predict almost all outcomes no matter what you do. It’s the ‘safe zone’. There are no dangers or risks of imperfection.

In this safe space, you don’t have any fear of unexpected outcomes or results. No chances are taken, and by default, no adventures or leaps of faith are taken either. Staying in your comfort zone can be nice, but it also can be a very monotonous and repetitive place to spend your time. Stepping out of it can be life-changing if you’re willing to take that chance of change or trying something new, but if you don’t you could be missing out on opportunities that could not only change your life but change your outlook on life as well.

Why the Comfort Zone is the Enemy of Success

There are many reasons why you may fear going outside of your comfort zone. Maybe you’re thinking you might fail. Maybe you’re concerned that you’ll get criticized or people might think poorly of you and your decisions. Or, maybe you’re a perfectionist who thinks that everything has to be perfect or it’s not worth doing at all. Perhaps all of the worries weighing on you are holding you back and keeping you locked into your comfort zone. Staying in your comfort zone will be your biggest roadblock to success. It will hold you back from your full potential.

How to Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Here’s the deal. The fear is real. It can appear anywhere from small changes you may make to big life transitions. But, fear can be overridden. How, you may ask? With consistency, clarity focus, and action. These three steps can help you break free of your internal restrictions and open up a world of possibilities by helping you escape the confinement of your comfort zone.

Step 1: Stay Focused

Changing your mindset has a bigger impact on end results than you may think. Staying focused on the big picture in a positive way is the first big change that needs to happen.

Train your brain to ignore those negative inner voices of fear and doubt by taking daily consistent action towards the things you want. Every morning, write down what you commit to doing towards the change you want. Be clear on what “win” would feel like to you when you look back on your day. Positive thoughts equal positive outcomes.

Step 2: Spend Your Time in a Meaningful Way

Being aware of how you spend your time can really be eye-opening. You will notice how much free time opens up for you when you don’t indulge in fear and worry.

Instead, devote this newfound time and energy into what matters most to you. Commit to never letting your insecurities be more important than your mission. Only attach positive thoughts to your goals and throw any negativity to the curb.

Being thoughtful of negativity and the thoughts that surround it will have a profound impact on the way you view change and new opportunity. The time you spend in that negative space takes up more of your time than you think. By being aware of those thoughts and the time it consumes, you will be shocked at how much more time is available to concentrate on your goals and dreams!

Step 3: Challenge Yourself to Grow

Finally: challenge yourself to grow in new and creative ways. Being open to new experiences and possibilities will grow you as a person, grow your confidence, and help support you in any new change you’d like to make in your life. Take that dance class you’ve always wanted to take. Learn how to paint. Say ‘yes’ when someone invites you to do something different and new.

Trying new things that are of interest to you is like taking a baby step outside of your comfort zone. If you can take a chance by trying a new experience that you have always had an interest in, then stepping outside of your comfort zone to make a small change that could impact your life will not be as scary as you had previously thought.

Saying "Goodbye" to the Comfort Zone

Your comfort zone can be what is holding you back from a world of endless possibilities. This ‘safe space’ can be a hindrance to your success in life. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can be scary. So frightening that you disregard the possibility of even attempting to change or take a chance.

But, the solution is simple. First, being consistent with training your brain to think about your goals in a positive way will change your mindset which will help you change those negative thoughts into positive ones. Changing your negative mindset to a positive one will free up your valuable time so you can concentrate on the things that will bring positive end results. Lastly, challenging yourself to explore new experiences will help you take that step outside of your comfort zone to make that change or take that chance that could positively change your life forever. Being stuck inside your comfort zone is a prison only you have the power to break out of. Once you break free and cross that line, endless possibilities await you!

All you need to do is change your outlook on what your comfort zone is. You have to change the way you think about what the outcome may be as possibilities, not consequences.
